1. Chickenpox is caused by the virus varicella zoster.
2. It is normally mild, but can be severe in children, adults and people with immune system impairments.
3. It is a highly contagious illness.
4. It is contagious 12 days before the rashes appear and until all the blisters have formed scabs.
5. There is a vaccine available against the varicella virus and it is also effective against severe chickenpox.
