Alcohol abuse contributes to 4% of global deaths and disability,
which then leads to become one of the main culprits of death and
disability worldwide. In a three-year investigation commissioned
by National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism USA (NIAAA),
there were at least 1,400 student deaths and 500,000 injuries
reported each year due to alcohol consumption. Furthermore, it
was also stated in the same report that at least 600,000
students were attacked by those student drinkers.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), alcohol claims the
lives of 1.8 million people (3.2%). Another 58.3 million people
(4%) are accounted for Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs).
One third of the 1.8 million deaths are caused by unintentional
injuries. Meanwhile, 40% of DALYs are related to neuro-psychiatric
conditions. Developed countries and developing countries have
higher DALYs compared to those poorer and less developed
Is alcohol consumption has become a social norm of today? Or has
it been misused by those who want to earn quick profits and
those who want to feel they are socially-connected with other
Alcohol-drinking peers, even though you very well its awful side
Back in the ancient time, alcohol was treated as a present of
gods as it was often used in religion and worship. Not only
that, alcohol beverage was a vital source of needed nutrients,
thanks to its analgesic, antiseptic, medicinal and thirst
quencher properties. Now, alcohol beverages are
offered in almost every restaurant and people drink it like any
other drinks. To some, drinking alcohol is It has somehow
evolved to become a social drink instead – during celebration or
just for the enjoyment.
This social drink has caused enough problems to both drinkers
and nondrinkers. It is “a depressant drug that is absorbed by
the stomach where it enters the bloodstream and is spread to all
the tissue in the body”.
When a person develops dependency on alcohol, four symptoms will
surface: craving, loss of control, physical dependence and
tolerance. This is called alcoholism or alcohol abuse. The
alcoholic will start to have a strong craving for alcohol
greater tolerance against alcohol after frequent consumption,
more alcohol will be gulped down into the stomach to create the
desired effects. Developing dependency towards alcohol is just
like developing a chronic disease, as it is a lifetime disease.
People enjoy consuming alcohol due to its ability to create
serenity and happiness feelings. All they need is just a small
dose of alcohol for this. However, it can also weaken the
drinker’s coordination, concentration, judgment and vision,
especially needed when you are on the steering wheels i.e. this
is how alcohol results in disability due to drink-driving
At a larger dose, the drinker will experience symptoms like
hangover, hallucination, insomnia, nausea, slurred speech and
vomiting. Drinkers who drink excessively in the long run will
develop permanent damage to important organs, which may
eventually lead to death.
What you drink today does not mean your child won’t be affected.
Pregnant ladies who drink excessive amounts of alcohol beverages
expose their babies (fetus). These babies may suffer from
mental retardation and permanent physical defect when born. Why
disrupt the lives of the innocent when you can throw away all
your whiskies and liquor?
Alcohol abuse not only will affect one’s health but also the
society. An alcoholic will develop problems such as anxiety,
cancer, chronic depression, cirrhosis, injuries, irritability
and insomnia. When they are no longer competent to carry out
their duty in their working life, they may soon face job loss
and will cause a disturbance in their family’s harmony
and even turn abusive i.e. domestic violence such as wife
battering, child abuse.
Does it worth it to indulge in alcohol? The answer is clear
here. Let yourself to be in control, not alcohol.
