What Are Those Additives?

What Are Those Additives?

Processed foods may be easy to prepare, but they are packed with additives. Here are some of the more common additives.

ARTIFICIAL COLOURING
These are chemical dyes used in foods and beverages.

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP
As its name suggests, this is a corn-based sweetener. It is sweeter and cheaper than sucrose.

ASPARTAME
A common addition to artificial sweeteners, it is most often used in diet carbonated beverages.

MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE (MSG)
Used as an additive in a wide variety of foods, MSG is a chemical derivative of a substance called glutamate.
Glutamate, which doesn't have its own flavour, acts by enhancing the flavour of other substances.

SODIUM BENZOATE
This additive is used to preserve many food items and drinks.

SODIUM NITRATE
It is used to preserve meat products like canned meat and sausages.

TRANS FAT
Trans fat is produced when hydrogen is added to vegetable oil. It is a popular ingredient in baked foods and margarine.
